APRIL is Child Abuse Prevention and Sexual Assault Awareness Month

To protect our children and families, we must TALK ABOUT these difficult topics to PREVENT child abuse and sexual assault. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, ONE LIFE AT A TIME!

Did you know…

  • In the U.S., 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime.
  • 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old.
  • Sexual assault is the most under-reported crime. Only 12% of child sexual abuse cases are ever reported to the authorities.
  • In 8 out of 10 cases (80%) of sexual assault, the victim knew the perpetrator.
  • 325,000 children are at risk of becoming victims of commercial child sexual exploitation each year.
  • Every 73 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Every 9 minutes, the victim is a child.
  • At least 1 in 7 children have experienced child abuse and/or neglect in the past year.
  • In 2020, there were 1584 child abuse cases reported in Lowndes County.

The good news is YOU can help prevent and bring awareness of sexual assault and child abuse by….

  • Educating yourself and your child about abuse, safety, and boundaries
  • Talking about prevention, awareness, and abuse openly
  • Minimizing potentially unsafe opportunities
  • Recognizing the signs of abuse and assault
  • Reacting responsibly—If you see something, say something; BYSTANDER INTERVENTION!
